Understanding The Five Elements Of Feng Shui

By Tom Dugan

When talking about this ancient art and science, there is usually mention of the five elements of feng shui. Just what are these, and how are they applied? This article will give you a very simple crash course on both these questions.

The Five Elements of Feng Shui Outlined

Fire, earth, metal, water, and wood are the five elements of feng shui. You will notice that these are all natural elements as well. All of these together form a circle of either construction or destruction, as follows:

Construction: Wood creates fire; energy from fire (such as the sun) is needed to feed the earth; metal is borne from the earth; water can be pulled from the elements that make up metal; water feeds the wood.

Destruction: Fire destroys metal; metal (such as an axe blade or other instrument) destroys wood; trees or wood feed from the earth; dirt from the earth absorbs water; of course, water destroys fire.

How the Five Elements of Feng Shui Harmonize

The underlying principle of feng shui is that there needs to be harmony and balance; having too much of any one element in your home or in a particular room is counterproductive and can be overwhelming. Most rooms will have one dominant quality of the five elements of feng shui and need another element to bring in some balance. For example, think of an all-white bathroom. White is clean and pure and represents water. However, when a room, even a bathroom, is completely white, it can feel cold and sterile. By introducing another one of the five elements of feng shui, such as earth, this can tone down that sterile feeling. Towels, artwork, and other items that are a warm brown can do the trick. Or, imagine a living room that is all brown, which is a strong earth tone. You can feel closed in or overwhelmed, as this is a warm color but one that easily smothers you. Another one of the five elements of feng shui, such as fire, can do the trick. Red accents such as pillows or afghans can brighten up the warm brown.

You can apply the principle of balancing the five elements of feng shui in virtually every aspect of your life. For example, maybe your personality is strong and fiery. This can be a good thing, but too much of a strong personality can easily overwhelm people. A campfire is good, but a forest fire is bad. So, consider what you can do to tone down your personality a bit. Think of the earth as being warm and nurturing; your personality can have some warm and nurturing sides to it as well to make you a more balanced and harmonious person.

There are really no right or wrong answers when it comes to applying the five elements of feng shui to any room of your home or part of your life. You simply need to remember how these elements are meant to harmonize and balance one another, and try to imitate those fine qualities as much as possible.

Attain Harmony With Feng Shui

By Amit Bhalla

Feng shui is basically a discipline with guidelines that are similar in temperament with many techniques of the architectural planning as well as internal furniture arrangements. Space, weather, astronomy, and geomagnetism are basic components of feng shui. Proponents claim that feng shui has an effect on health, wealth, and personal relationships. In fact, feng shui is one of the most compatible forms of astrology that has a solution to any and every problem right from human health to any problem related to the house. Feng shui, in earlier times as well as today, has been known as “Kan-Yu” which means ‘The Law of Heaven and Earth.’ Today’s Feng Shui schools educate that it is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. The literal translation of Feng shui is “wind-water.” This is basically cultural shorthand taken from the one of the passages of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty.

Early feng shui simply relied on astronomy so as to find correlations between humans and the universe and to understand the fact that it is inseparable from an understanding of political power in premodern China. Chinese often used the celestial pole determined by the pole stars to determine the north-south axis of settlements. This technique provided the more precise alignments of the Shang walls at Yanshi and Zhengzhou. In fact, all the capital cities of China followed the rules of Feng Shui for their design and layout. These rules were codified during the Zhou era in the “Kaogong ji” which in English mean the manual of crafts. Rules for builders were codified in the “Lu ban jing” that means the carpenter’s manual. In fact, this might be quite astonishing but even rraves and tombs also followed the rules that were laid down by Feng Shui. From the earliest records that are available today, it seems that the rules for the structures of the graves and dwellings were the same.

This technique or science as many calls it, is again quite intriguing and one has to be well versed with the rules laid by Feng Shui to create harmony between humans and the universe. There are various permutations and combinations that need to be done while trying to achieve harmony through Feng Shui. In fact, today wherever we go, we see that things are placed according to the rules of Feng Shui. In fact, houses are also built on the rules laid by this technique. Even though we are in an era of high-level technological advances, we still believe in astrology and things like Feng Shui. In fact, these kinds of techniques help to sustain hope in ourselves to think that things will all be well.

The very basic thing is that even if the world has undergone tremendous changes and has been progressing a lot, still we humans somewhere or the other, tend to get inclined to the cosmic being and to the various techniques that help to unite the cosmic with us.

By Adam Peters

Every individual strives towards making his family and work life better and achieve success in everything. The most important factor to accomplish this is hard work and focus. However the art of Feng Shui can also contribute towards this goal of balance and success in life.

A beautiful and well kept home translates into a refreshing ambience and positive vibes all around. A refreshing change in your home will result in a refreshing change in your life too!

The origin of Feng Shui was in China and its fundamental theory is that people, places and things have energy. Feng Shui in English means “Wind & Water.

According to Feng Shui, placing a thing in a particular location or manner can create balance and harmony with the environment thus spreading positive vibes.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are the five elements in nature considered to be the fundamental basis of Feng Shui. It is believed that these elements can contribute to creating a perfectly balanced environment.

The common man’s notion about Feng Shui is different then the actual concept of this art. People believe that moving around furniture or following a few rules while decorating their house is Feng Shui. But this is far from reality since the art of Feng Shui is much more profound then this.

If followed correctly Feng Shui can diminish the negative powers and danger in ones life and bring about a balance and harmony which increases good luck in the form of good health and success in life.

The art of Feng Shui generates positive energy which leads to positive changes in your love life, romance and family life. History has shown that a Child’s education too can be positively effective by Feng Shui. Over thousands of years, people have used this art to enhance the studying and concentrating power of children.

Work towards an objective and your hard work will bring you success! This has been a tried and tested mantra over the years. And if you team hard work with the power of Feng Shui you will experience good luck and success in your life.

The use of Feng Shui has been helping more and more people to get richer. However becoming millionaires would not have been possible if those people would not have had the will to succeed and put in equal amount of hard work.

I myself have experienced the positive change Feng Shui can bring in ones life. I discovered the depth of the knowledge of Feng Shui only when I started learning about it and it has enhanced the positive energy in my life.

Using Feng Shui remedies or enhancements to improve a particular environment, whether it is a house or a business, is an important task. The remedy or enhancement should blend with the environment leading to an almost perfect balance which then expands itself to the life and the environment of the individual.

Perfectly Balanced Feng Shui

By Maggie Z. Mathews

When it comes to the very principles of Feng Shui – Qi the life force flows like a river through all bodies and all cultures throughout our universe.

Many if not most cultures pervade that a universal energy – some times called Qi or Chi flows constantly everywhere. Whether it Qi (Chi) in India or Ki in Japan, prana or pranha in India it is all the same. This energy medium of chi flows throughout the universe and the earth just in the same way that it flows throughout the human body, and changes made by nature or humankind will vary its very course. Just as acupuncture, chakra balancing and shiatsu massage can adjust the flow of energy in the body, so can feng shui adjust the flow of energy around us.

Feng Shui literally means (the flow) of “wind” and “water”. The wind disperses the invisible life energy and the water contains it. When you practice feng shui you attract and cultivate positive energy or sheng qi (shung chi) and dispel or eliminate negative energy or sha 1i (shar chi)

Positive sheng qo meanders gently along curved lines while negative sha qo strikes quickly in straight lines. For the qi to be beneficial and nourishing, you need to keep it flowing – not too quickly and not too slowly. Sheng qi comes from nature while corners. Known as “secret arrows” generate sha qi.

Qi should be encouraged to enter a dwelling and its garden and to flow freely and slowly throughout the space. If it is blocked, it will become stagnant and destructive.

In heaven there is tien qi ( nian chi) or heaven qi , on earth there is ren qi ( rem chi) or human chi. Heaven qi is made up of all the forces that heavenly bodies exert on earth such as sun and rain. Earth qi is affected by heaven qi – too much rain will cause flooding, too little will cause plants to die- and then within the earth qi , each person has his or her own qi. The aim of feng shui is to keep harmony and balance between heaven, earth and human qi.

Feng Shui is also referred to as the study of the way of heaven and earth in relation to human. It can also help us choose a way of life and a place to live that is in harmony with our ren tao (rem dao) or the way of being human. The Chinese call this relations san cai (san chie) or the three gifts.

The Chinese believe that everything that exists has qi, and in turn, everything that has qi has yin (passive, masculine) qualities. Yin and Yang are opposites and complementary – one cannot exist without the other. Night does not exist without day, winter without summer nor shadow without sun. Similarly, each quality contains some of the opposites.

When you feel warm, positive and good about a place the Chinese would say that it good Feng Shui because the Yin and Yang are perfectly balanced. Feng Shui.

Feng Shui, very flexible art that brings out the best in your design choices by improving the flow of energy, allows you ample room to express your own personality and flair. Although implementing the ancient principles of Feng Shui to create balance and harmony in your environment, you still can preserve your own taste and retain the integrity of a room’s atmosphere. Moreover, Feng Shui techniques are rather easy to practice, and can help you improve your understanding and appreciation of the beauty already existing in your home by uncovering the potential for tranquility and harmony concealed within every space.

Feng Shui need not be considered separately as it works well within any other design scheme blending seamlessly into whatever type of atmosphere you are trying to create in your environment. This is only one reason why Feng Shui is appropriate in a wide variety of venue. Feng Shui’s, unlike other aesthetic schools does not have a strict, dominant look. It can be streamline to suit any space from your work space to your bathroom to your bedroom without significantly altering the basic design scheme. For instance, it is viable to implement Feng Shui in a sleek contemporary office setting or in a Victorian-style or romantic bedroom. One reason – Feng Shui is not about appearances or the specifics of how things should look but about maximizing energy flow and visual harmony, to use in any room designed in any style.

Because you employ objects you already to create new, more harmonious arrangements, Feng Shui lets you create a new atmosphere for any area of your home without eliminating or subjugating your personal style. For example, consider the use of color. Feng Shui often suggests integrating certain colors, e.g. scarlet, in specific areas of a room, however, you can use almost any item colored accordingly to make the Feng Shui decorating system effective. This suggests all that is necessary if you to rummage around in your home’s inventory for anything that has scarlet and reposition it in the right area. This could be anything: a vase, a pillow, a portrait or even an attractive hardcover book. From Feng Shui you learn to use what you currently have for better effect.

Since the process of Feng Shui lends extra influence to the design choices you’ve already made, it means Feng Shui is a skillful way to amplify how your setting reflects your taste. As a result, Feng Shui always reflects your personality during every step of the process from designing, to implementation to the final product. Feng Shui can help you draw out the best in your environment, and from within yourself. When you employ Feng Shui to charge your home, office or even car with positive energy, you will be ensuring that you and your unique style shine most brilliantly.

Feng Shui In The Past And The Present

By Candace Czarny

Feng Shui, translated as “wind and water,” is perceived as representing two symbols of the natural flow of nature. Feng Shui practices attempt to recreate this natural environment in which the life positive life force or energy known as “chi,” flows as freely and easily as wind or water. An ancient Chinese art, Feng Shui is believed to increase the flow chi in any area, large or small. Its intent in enhancing the amount of chi, releasing it to flow freely throughout any area, permits any practitioner to achieve their personal goals. For several centuries, people have applied the principles of Feng Shui to attract success in many areas, including in the kingdom of the heart and in the business world, and to win friends.

Traditionally, the school of thought known as Feng Shui has been practiced only by experts. Originally, more than 3,000 years ago, it was fashioned by a spiritual master, a student of nature and the spiritual realm. In order to maximize the positive characteristics of an area, he designed a set of basic rules directed at increasing positive energy. The end result of his dream lay in the construction of homes, workplaces and other buildings that would be beneficial to the occupants, helping them to invite good luck and positive fortune while supplying them with the ability to make the most of good luck when it arrives. His wish is still alive and well today.

In China, the acceptance of Feng Shui was swift. It quickly gained popularity and credibility with certain people becoming skillful experts in the subject. This knowledge and positive reception soon spread to other countries, becoming world wide in scope. Today, many homeowners and businesspeople traditionally consult Feng Shui experts when decorating rooms or locating a business. These consultants can draw on several thousand years of tradition and investigation. Using any number of techniques, a Feng Shui an expert can alter the energy of any particular space or area.

Over time, several different schools of Feng Shui have become apparent, each with its own unique goals and approach. As a result, finding a Feng Shui pertinent to your own specific situation is not difficult. The process of increased specialization, moreover, simplifies the means and ability to incorporate Feng Shui it into their lives. A further benefit of the continuous evolution of Feng Shui is the increased exactitude. As a result, superior results are possible with less work and less cost than in the past.

Over the centuries, the art of Feng Shui has become refined into an increasingly adept mathematical science. With the implementation of this characteristic Feng Shui has become much easier to apply to a space today than it has in the past. There are now clear guidelines to facilitate in the process so that even an inexperienced amateur can apply Feng Shui to a home or office space, creating a feeling of balance and harmony in any space of any size. Furthermore, with the availability of Feng Shui guides and information through the internet, you can eliminate the need to consult an expensive Feng Shui expert before you undertake to practice and benefit from the rules of Feng Shui.

How Feng Shui Brings Prosperity

By Candace Czarny

If you wish to gain wealth and prosperity, the Feng Shui tradition states this requires both the correct attitude and the right conditions. When flow of chi in your home or workplace is blocked by obstacles, a struggle hindering prosperity ensues. Removing obstacles and freeing energy is part of applying Feng Shui. It is wrong to believe prosperity is solely about possessing money or owning things. Feng Shui is about consistently focusing on achieving and maintaining a sense of abundance and safekeeping. When considered from a spiritual perspective, abundance is not specifically restricted to financial wealth, but focuses on an abundance of all the desirable aspects in life: balance, family, health.

Feng Shui is an effective tool in helping you reach your goals no matter what they may be. If your aim is true wealth and prosperity, you require an environment that works with not against you. If the environment remains static, it works against you. Since your environment affects your thought patterns, you are likely to become ensnared by it, dragged down. Your environment should be a symbol of your prosperity and reflect who you are and where you are going – one that exemplifies the intent to act. At this point, you should consider Feng Shui. If chi energy flows freely, it will move you forward towards your goals.

Ironically, to achieve prosperity, one of the first steps in applying Feng Shui is to remove all clutter in your life and from your environment. All that extraneous material blocking doors and windows, the old clothes and furniture collecting dust mites, can act as an inhibitor. Through Feng Shui, you learn to remove all such obstacles and liberate your space. The negative energy held by dead plants, broken and damaged furniture and uncompleted projects does not contribute to expanding your wealth and well-being. Clutter can be defined as anything unfinished, unresolved or unused. If you use Feng Shui, you can deal with the clutter and free yourself.

Clutter slows down chi energy, but, in many instances, environmental energy is moving rapidly, speeding through the area, as swift as money flying out the door. Once you utilize Feng Shui principles, you act quickly to restore the balance between too much and too little material.

In addition to removing obstacles, Feng Shui involves the accumulation or introduction of positive energy. When certain items are placed properly, they draw in the good energy that contributes to prosperity. From positive motivating objects and symbols of wealth, to coins and family photos, a variety of objects can play a role in manufacturing the right type of energy in your home. Feng Shui principles guide you in the process of adding the specific colors, objects and special features to your workplace and residence that contribute to prosperity. Feng Shui will even identify the “wealth corner.” Of all areas, this place requires special attention to neatness and cleanliness and must be designed to bring positive, prosperous thoughts to mind.

A further note: in introducing into or adding positive symbols and energies to your environment, you are not concentrating on what you lack, or on a sensation that your possessions are insufficient in some manner. Feelings of craving and dissatisfaction do not contribute to prosperity. In utilizing the principles of Feng Shui, you concentrate on gratitude, which, in turn, creates a sense of abundance. Feng Shui demonstrates two objectives: how to surround yourself with symbols of prosperity and wealth and how to imbue your environment with positive, forward-moving energy. Both, acting together, will help you bring to fruition your goals.
