Men (Blokes) and Feng Shui Gardening

By Ross Lamond

Recently I’ve been talking to various people about Chi Gardening and a discussion with two blokes come to mind. Both were successful, you know the big house, boat and maybe millionaire tag and both were interested in nature and their need to connect to it.

To them connecting to nature removed them from the stresses of everyday life. One of the blokes made his money buying and doing up houses and was very concerned with good presentation. He would establish free flowing, neat and healthy gardens and modeled his homes to reflect similar characteristics and was aware of good balance throughout. The product had to have that feel good image about it.

He was inadvertently practicing Feng Shui and it did him well. Both men suggested to me there was something far more meaningful in their need to reaffirm connection to nature. One suggested it may go back to when we had no alternative but to live off the land. Way back in time to when there were no cities and towns and we were basically nomadic. Living off the land was a life or death thing, food, shelter and protection from predators forming the basic needs for survival. Maybe Darwinian traits designed to expose those weaker or unable to cope with the environmental stresses of the day. The land was their saviour and they had respect for it, and the land deeply ingrained into their persona.

Subsequently urbanisation over the centuries has displaced many and those living in cities having their genetic imprints modified to living by organisation of materials and others. Maybe the world is now poorer for encouraging that trait. We’ve become consumers of what’s produced from the land and not having a need to maintain connection to it and with nature. That assumption may explain why some social groupings have no interest in gardens and prefer the confines of towns and cities.

Yet genetically modified imprints are still strong enough within many of us to enjoy nature and natural surroundings and we do so in the knowledge that our survival isn’t dependent on it as before. Could it be males seek reconnection to nature more so than females because the instinctive bond may have been stronger in males? But this point had better be left for discussion elsewhere.

If the male bonding thing is the case, Harmonious Chi Gardening can be a man’s thing as much as a woman’s thing. The bloke visiting the garden for re-connection to nature and using gardening as a new found skill to harmonise with their surroundings. Maybe growing herbs, fruit or vegetables or providing a lawn area for the kids, maybe a place for a seat and sitting down with a cool drink. Creating places of visual appeal, functional use and enjoyment could be good therapy for true blokes.

Hopefully if Harmonious Chi Gardening offers a bloke a role in the garden it will do so because they want to connect with nature and reaffirm some instinctive urge to reach out and touch the earth. They are spiritually awakened by the association.

What is Feng Shui and Can it Improve Your Life?

By Cheri Brennan

What is feng shui? That is a very challenging question to answer. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art that seeks to restore the balance of vital energies in the environment. It is a system of aesthetics that is believed to utilize the laws of both heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to improve your life by receiving positive energy. This positive energy is also known as the “chi.” It is believed that this balanced flow of energy can bring good health and prosperity to those who respect and follow it. The chi, according to Chinese philosophy, is the essential energy that can make or break the kingdom. Traditionally, feng shui has been used to determine the best place to live, to farm and to be buried.

Feng shui has been somewhat reinvented by new age entrepreneurs since Richard Nixon’s trip to China in 1972. Its popularity has risen from the American’s desire for magic and mystery as well as order in their lives. Feng shui design has become a popular trend for interior design in residences as well as in corporate settings.

In English Feng shui means wind and water. “Chi rides the wind (feng) and is scattered, but it is retained when encountering water (shui).” These two elements symbolize harmony according to Chinese beliefs. But what is the modern perception of feng shui? Many people have begun to learn the principles of feng shui because of its exoticism. Some have used it to redecorate their homes and offices in an effort to bring balance and attract abundance in their lives while living and working in these places. But is that all there is to feng shui? Is there more to learn and understand about how this ancient art can affect your entire life?

Deeply rooted in Taoist symbolism, feng shui is the understanding of the laws of nature and the knowledge that the earth and humans exist together as one. The contrast theories of yin-yang and that of the five elements complete the vision of life in harmony or disharmony with the environment around us. From the feng shui perspective, the basic analysis of a place will involve the identification of the elements that break the chi or flow of energy. Items are rearranged or moved to the background so as to promote balance. It is believed that you can accomplish this balance and a compatibility with nature by a careful and correct placement of the furniture and objects in the house and office.

While a feng shui master could probably easily answer the question, “what is feng shui?” it may be difficult to understand. Obtaining information through the use of the compass, Chinese astronomy and the bagua may seem confusing to some. You may be surprised to learn that feng shui goes beyond just redecorating a room or an office. It takes into account the way the entire structure interacts with the surrounding environment including the local climate, the topography of the land, the presence of nearby bodies of water, vegetation and soil quality.

Feng Shui: The Power Of Light

By Frances T. Russell

Feng Shui and light. In its simplest form light and illumination represent energy. The power of light. The power of energy. Overall natural lighting is the simplest Feng Shui. Natural lighting is best. Anything else is not natural. It is synthetic and not of real and substantial origins or power. Light represents good. Light represents power, strength, honor, integrity, enlightenment and education.

A room, home or person without full and natural light lives in darkness. It is as if that person or their family live in moral darkness without the benefits of the power of qi and Feng Shui.

Thus in terms of Feng Shui and the power and benefits of Feng Shui natural lighting is always best. Artificial lighting is an add on – an accessory. Artificial lighting can help to adjust the qi in dark and very difficult spots in your home, office or residence. Take great care when employing artificial light that this type of lighting, when employed, creates the same balancing as well as balanced stabilizing effect as natural light from the great sun of our heavens and universe – our “sun”, Work greatly to have the same and similar effect of natural light in your adjustments of artificial, man made light, with the basic natural light of your environments and environs.

How can this are accomplished. First things first. Walls should be brightly colored – paint should be light and neutral colors. The same with wallpaper coloration choices. You would be amazed at how much light a dark color wall can absorb compared to lighter and whiter colors. Even the color of growth and renewal, green, was made by the creator to absorb as much of the growth enhancing light as possible. Use lighter coloration choices. Next I f possible, then the surface of the painted or wallpaper should be flat, to best reflect the light energy – not of mottled or dimpled textures.

The walls themselves should be clean – free of dirt, grease and grime. A simple washing of walls can do great wonders in increasing and improving the natural lighting levels and energies to specific areas.

It can be said that “harsh” overhead lighting can be more than oppressive. Think of the lamps and lighting in prison movies and even big box stores or even abusive employment agencies. What do they all have in common – harsh overhead single focused light and lamp fixtures. On the other hand table mounted can and do work to create soft pools of light. Rooms lit by table mounted lights, carefully placed, seem to have soft pools of light. These rooms jump of qi. A feeling and balance and overall comfort and relaxation results. On the other extreme if you are saddled with a dark corner or sunken living room or a room planned to be sunken and solitary in nature then a carefully as well as strategically placed upward facing floor lamp or lamps can more than help stimulate qi or those dark and distant areas. In dealing with a “yan” area then candles can be added to add and enhance the flows and retention of vital yang energies and qualities.

Lastly in garden areas lighting can be use in these garden areas to balance shape, even out the surface and surfaces of the land and of course bring life and breadth to any and all dead spots and areas. Vital qi forces will just rush in.

It can be said that a man without education lives in darkness. A room , residence , abode or business office without full or balanced light and lighting lives similarly in darkness – in a position of lack of power , honor , integrity , luck and prosperity. Take the time to balance and enhance light, the type, balance and level of light to your living and working areas. Feng Shui !

Mindfulness Meditation by Jon Kabat Zinn

By Ben Sanderson

One thing that many people have in common is the fact that they’ve been told to live in the future rather than the moment. You’ve more than likely heard it growing up: “Look ahead! Plan for the future! Know what you want!” Okay, knowing what you want might be a good idea, but if you ever find yourself planning conversations with people in your mind rather than actually having the conversation with them, you might have a bit of a problem.

So how do you go about living in the present? The future is important, but you need to understand that the way the present plays out today will affect how the future unfolds tomorrow! Mindfulness Meditation is a course that will teach you to live your life as it unfolds rather than living in the future! There are a few misconceptions regarding meditation, one of them being thee fact that mediation is intended to ‘blank’ the mind. In Mindfulness Meditation by Jon Kabat Zinn you will find that meditation can be used to experience life to the fullest, and change the way you perceive your problems.

The idea of course is to ensure that your fears and your problems do NOT control you. Rather you should be in control of THEM, and you should have the ability to transform your relationships, understand life, and strengthen your creativity. Another misconception you might have at this point is that you are using this method to run away from your problems. Running away is never the solution, and Mindfulness Mediation is more about facing your problems, and ensuring that you can transform them into something useful.

With Mindfulness Meditation you will be able to access your own deep inner resources for learning, enrich your day to day experience, and even reduce stress levels. As you probably know, stress is responsible for a number of different problems which range from trouble with relationships and even issues with job performance. Do you feel you have limitations? Do you believe they are keeping you from performing your job? If so, then there may be a way to fix them, but for now you can learn to work within those limitations, ultimately creating a better environment for yourself.

Finally, you can reduce or even completely overcome addictive behaviors that are holding you back! This is the control over your live that you’ve always wanted. You can operate far beyond automatic reactions, and you can find yourself growing like never before! These are revelations and advancements that many people will only DREAM of, and with Mindfulness Meditation you can take hold of those achievements and run all the way to home.

Are you ready to live a better life? Do you have what it takes to be the person you’ve always dreamed you could be? If so, then now would be a great time to take a look at this course and determine what it can actually do for you. It may not be too long before you’ve finally carved a path into the great unknown, ready to start this adventure called life.
